The Phantom Teahouse Lady (in-depth article)

Today’s update is the first in a series of more in-depth articles about certain character oddities/items of interest across the Game Jam prototype and the final release of Shenmue II – this one concerning Wen Huachun, who is sometimes found at a tea shop in the Tea Break Building – but also sometimes not! (hence my coining her as the ‘Phantom Teahouse Lady’) Read the full article for an explanation of the curious story of this NPC, whose existence I may not even have been aware of if not for two strategy guidebooks, leading onto how and when she can be found in the final release, and how this differs in the Game Jam prototype. You can read the full article, posted to my Shenmusings blog, via the link below:

This article has also been linked on the NPC Placement Changes/Oddities section.

I have also made the following small updates of music stuff I missed/forgot to mention re: Disc 1:

Playthrough Changes – Disc 1:

  • Added note of Jianmin’s theme suddenly stopping when sparring with him, then resuming in the following cutscene
  • Added note of normal Man Mo Temple music playing in first entry cutscene (final plays this track)
  • Added note of cutscene music changing back to shop theme after the QTE in Zhangyu Barber’s Shop (cutscene track keeps playing in final)
  • Added note of normal Man Mo Temple music playing while sweeping the soot off the walls (final plays this track)

Stay tuned for further in-depth articles about similarly strange NPC’s in the near future!
